- Santorini for caldera views, sunsets and couples, Crete for beaches, variety and families
- Crete is far bigger and usually better value
- Fast ferries link Heraklion and Santorini in about 2 hours
- May-June and September-October are the best months for both
Santorini and Crete are little more than 100 kilometres apart, but they offer completely different holidays. Santorini is a small, dramatic volcanic island famous for whitewashed villages perched on a caldera and its sunsets. Crete is Greece's largest island: a whole world of beaches, gorges, mountain villages, Minoan palaces and two lively cities.
The quick version: Santorini for a romantic, view-led break of three to five nights. Crete for a full week or two of beaches and exploring. Many people do both.

The case for Santorini
The view is the reason to come. Stay on the caldera rim in Fira, Imerovigli or Oia and you'll look over a flooded volcanic crater towards the islands in the middle. Watching the sunset from Oia is a bucket-list moment, though you'll share it with crowds. Many people find Imerovigli or a boat trip just as beautiful and far calmer.
Beyond the views: walk the clifftop path from Fira to Oia (about 10 kilometres), visit the Bronze Age town of Akrotiri, preserved under ash, take a boat to the volcano and hot springs, and try the local Assyrtiko wines. The beaches, such as Perissa and Kamari, are black sand and pleasant rather than spectacular.
Santorini is expensive. Rooms with a caldera view and private plunge pools cost a premium, and Greece charges a per-room climate resilience fee that is higher on Santorini in peak season. Cruise passengers now pay a landing fee too. Visit outside July and August if you can.
The case for Crete
Crete has the beaches Santorini lacks: Balos lagoon and Elafonissi in the west, Falassarna for sunsets, and Vai's palm forest in the east. It also has real variety:
- Knossos, the great Minoan palace near Heraklion. Go early to beat the heat and the tour coaches.
- Samaria Gorge, a full-day hike of around 16 kilometres through one of Europe's longest gorges, usually open from about May to October.
- Chania, with a Venetian harbour and lanes of tavernas, and Rethymno, with its fortress and old town.
- Mountain villages, olive oil and some of the best food in Greece.
Crete suits families well: shallow sandy beaches, plenty of all-inclusive and self-catering options, and lots to do on rainy or cooler days. Hiring a car makes sense, because it takes over four hours to drive from one end to the other. See our car hire abroad tips for UK drivers.
Can you combine Santorini and Crete?
Yes, and it's a great combination. High-speed ferries run between Heraklion and Santorini from spring to autumn and take about two hours, depending on the boat and the weather. A typical plan: fly into Crete for a week of beaches and sightseeing, then take the ferry to Santorini for two or three nights before flying home, or the other way round. Check open-jaw flights, which fly into one airport and out of another.
When to go
May, June, September and early October offer warm seas, long days and fewer crowds than July and August. Crete's season runs roughly April to October. Santorini is pretty out of season, but many hotels and restaurants close from November to March, and winter weather can be windy. Frequently asked questions
Is Santorini or Crete better for a first trip to Greece?
For one week, Crete gives you more variety: beaches, history and food. Santorini is best as a short add-on or a romantic break.
Which is cheaper, Santorini or Crete?
Crete is generally cheaper for accommodation, food and car hire. Santorini's caldera-view hotels are among the most expensive in Greece.
How do you get from Crete to Santorini?
Take a high-speed ferry from Heraklion, about two hours, which runs mainly from spring to autumn. Flights between the islands are limited and usually go via Athens.
Does Santorini have good beaches?
Santorini's beaches are dark volcanic sand or pebbles. They're fine for swimming, but if beaches are your priority, Crete is much better.
