Ha Long Bay is Vietnam's most famous natural sight: a seascape of around 2,000 limestone islands and islets rising sheer from the Gulf of Tonkin, many of them hollowed out by caves. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the classic side trip from Hanoi, and for many visitors the highlight of a trip to Vietnam.
What you'll see
Most cruises sail from Tuan Chau or Ha Long and weave between the karst towers, stopping at a cave, a beach and a kayaking spot. Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave is one of the largest, with huge chambers and lit rock formations. Ti Top Island has a short, steep climb to a viewpoint over the bay. Kayaking takes you into hidden lagoons and under rock arches, and you might pass floating fishing villages, although many residents have been resettled on land.
Lan Ha Bay, next to Ha Long and reached from Cat Ba Island, has similar scenery with fewer boats and is popular for kayaking and swimming. Bai Tu Long Bay, to the north-east, is quieter still. The bay is busy, and litter can be a problem in places, so choosing the right area and boat makes a big difference.
Tickets and tips
- Overnight cruises: a one-night cruise with transfers from Hanoi typically starts from about US$120 per person (2026) on a mid-range boat, with luxury vessels several times that. Bay fees, meals and kayaking are usually included; drinks are extra.
- Day trips: a long day from Hanoi with about four hours on the water. Cheaper, but rushed.
- Choosing a boat: check recent reviews, cabin size and the route, and book with an established operator. Two nights lets you reach quieter corners.
- Weather: typhoons and storms can cancel sailings, mainly from June to September. The coast guard decides, and reputable operators refund or reschedule.
- Season: October to April is drier and calmer, though December to February can be cool and misty. Summer is hot and good for swimming between storms.
Getting there
Ha Long City is about 170 kilometres east of Hanoi. Since the expressway opened, the drive takes about two and a half hours, and most cruises include a shuttle bus from the Old Quarter. For Lan Ha Bay, transfers usually go via Hai Phong or Cat Ba.

Frequently asked questions
Is Ha Long Bay worth visiting?
Yes, despite the crowds. An overnight cruise, especially into Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long Bay, shows the scenery at its best, with sunset and sunrise on the water.
Is one night enough on Ha Long Bay?
One night is enough for most people. Choose two if you want quieter areas, more kayaking or a slower pace.
What is the difference between Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay?
They are neighbours with the same limestone scenery. Lan Ha has fewer boats and generally cleaner water, while Ha Long has the big caves and the most cruise options.
