The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory south-east of the Bahamas, made up of around 40 low islands and cays sitting on shallow banks of brilliant turquoise water. Most visitors stay on Providenciales, known as Provo, home to Grace Bay and a long strip of upscale resorts. Beyond Provo, the islands are sparsely populated, with salt ponds, caves, flamingos and empty beaches.
The islands use the US dollar and US-style plugs (120V), but cars drive on the left and English is the language. They are on Eastern Time with US daylight saving, so they are five hours behind the UK for most of the year. This is a high-end destination, with prices to match.
Entry requirements
British passport holders can usually visit Turks and Caicos visa-free for up to 90 days. You may be asked for a return ticket, proof of accommodation and enough funds for your stay, and your passport should be valid for at least six months. If you travel via the US, you need an ESTA. Rules change, so check GOV.UK foreign travel advice before booking.
Where to go in Turks and Caicos
Grace Bay, Providenciales
Twelve miles of powder-white sand and calm, clear water protected by an offshore reef. Most of the big resorts and restaurants are here, and Coral Gardens and Bight Reef have good snorkelling straight off the beach.
Chalk Sound and the west of Provo
Chalk Sound is a vivid turquoise lagoon dotted with tiny rocky islets, best seen by kayak or paddleboard. Nearby Taylor Bay and Sapodilla Bay are shallow, sheltered beaches ideal for small children.
North and Middle Caicos
A short ferry from Provo takes you to North Caicos, linked by causeway to Middle Caicos. Expect lush scenery by local standards, the Conch Bar Caves, Mudjin Harbour's dramatic cliffs and almost no development.
Grand Turk and Salt Cay
The capital, Cockburn Town on Grand Turk, has Bermudian-style colonial houses and a historic lighthouse, plus a cruise ship terminal. Diving off the wall is superb, and from January to April humpback whales pass Grand Turk and tiny Salt Cay.
The cays
Day trips by boat from Provo visit uninhabited cays such as Iguana Island (Little Water Cay), with its endemic rock iguanas, and remote sandbars for swimming and conch.
Best time to visit Turks and Caicos
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Winter (December-April) | Peak season, dry and sunny, around 26-29 °C; whale watching January-April |
| Late spring (May-June) | Hotter, quieter and better value; calm seas |
| Summer (July-August) | Hot, with family crowds; hurricane risk begins |
| Autumn (September-November) | Peak hurricane season; some resorts close for part of September or October |
Getting to Turks and Caicos from the UK
British Airways flies to Providenciales from London a couple of times a week, with one stop on the way (the routing has varied, often via Antigua or Nassau). Total journey time is usually about 10–12 hours. Otherwise, connect in Miami, New York, Charlotte, Atlanta or another US hub, which needs an ESTA.
Getting around
Taxis are the default on Provo and charge per person at set rates, which adds up quickly; a hire car (driving on the left) is usually better value for a week. There is no real public bus. Ferries link Provo with North Caicos, and domestic flights serve Grand Turk, Salt Cay and South Caicos.
Groceries and eating out are very expensive. A villa or suite with a kitchen and a trip to a big supermarket on arrival can cut costs significantly.
Money and costs
Turks and Caicos is one of the priciest places in the Caribbean. Budget at least £250–400 per person per day for a mid-range trip including accommodation, and far more at the top resorts. US dollars and cards are used everywhere. Hotel bills carry a government tax and usually a service charge, so check what is included before tipping.
Frequently asked questions
Is Grace Bay worth the hype?

Can you fly direct from the UK to Turks and Caicos?
British Airways flies from London to Providenciales on one ticket, but with a stop on the way, so it isn't non-stop.
Is Turks and Caicos part of the UK?
It is a British Overseas Territory, so it has links to the UK, but it has its own government, immigration rules and currency (the US dollar).
When is hurricane season in Turks and Caicos?
June to November, with the highest risk from August to October.
