Nerja is the jewel of the eastern Costa del Sol. Unlike the high-rise resorts west of Málaga, it has kept much of its whitewashed character, with a lively old centre, a palm-lined clifftop promenade and a string of sandy coves backed by the Sierra Almijara mountains. It's popular with British holidaymakers, especially couples and families looking for a relaxed beach holiday with good restaurants.
Flights to Málaga take about 2h45 from London, with direct routes from almost every UK airport. Spain is one hour ahead of the UK, plugs are the two-pin European type and you drive on the right. Prices are similar to other Costa del Sol resorts. For more of the coast see our Costa del Sol, Andalucía and Spain guides.
Where to stay
- Old town and Balcón de Europa – the heart of Nerja, with narrow streets, tapas bars and small hotels and apartments. Best for walking everywhere, but some beaches involve steps.
- Burriana – the area above Nerja's biggest beach, about 15 minutes' walk east of the centre, with apartments and a long promenade of restaurants. Ideal for families.
- Torrecilla and Playa El Salón – west of the centre, with beach access and good-sized hotels and apartments.
- Maro – a tiny village about 4 km east, close to the caves and quiet coves. Peaceful but you will want a car or taxis.
- Villas in the hills – plenty of holiday villas with pools sit on the slopes around Nerja and Frigiliana.
Things to do
- Balcón de Europa – the clifftop viewpoint in the centre of town, with views along the coast and down to little beaches.
- Nerja Caves – vast caverns with huge stalactites, discovered in 1959, about 10 minutes from town. Summer concerts are held inside.
- Burriana beach – a long sandy beach with sunbeds, water sports and seafront restaurants known for paella.
- Kayak or paddleboard the Maro cliffs – guided trips explore the protected Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs, waterfalls and caves.
- Río Chíllar walk – a popular summer hike wading up a river into a narrow gorge. Wear shoes you don't mind getting wet.
- Frigiliana – a beautiful white village in the hills just above Nerja.
- Day trips – Málaga is under an hour away and Granada about 1h30.
Many of Nerja's coves are reached by steep steps or paths. If you need easy access, Burriana and El Salón are among the most straightforward beaches.

Getting there
Fly to Málaga airport (AGP). Nerja is about 60 km east, and the transfer takes about 50 minutes to an hour by car on the A-7 motorway. Shared coach transfers take longer. Alsa buses run from Málaga to Nerja in about 1-1h30; you may need to change at Málaga bus station when coming from the airport. Granada airport is a similar distance but has few UK flights.
Getting around
Nerja is walkable, and a small tourist train runs between the centre and Burriana. Buses link Nerja with Frigiliana, Maro and the caves, and with Málaga and Almuñécar along the coast. Hire a car if you want to explore the white villages and inland Andalucía, but parking in the centre is tight; use the underground car parks.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Nerja from Málaga airport?
About 60 km, roughly 50 minutes to an hour by car or taxi. Shared coach transfers usually take longer.
Is Nerja good for families?
Yes. Burriana has a long, sandy beach with plenty of facilities, and the town is relaxed and safe-feeling, with lots of apartments and villas with pools.
Is Nerja better than Marbella?
They're different. Nerja is smaller and more traditional, with coves and cliffs; Marbella is glitzier, with longer beaches, more nightlife and luxury hotels.
Do I need a car in Nerja?
Not for the town and beaches. A car is useful for Frigiliana, the hills and day trips, although buses cover the main routes.
