Deventer is one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands and was a wealthy Hanseatic trading city on the river IJssel. Its centre is full of medieval and Renaissance buildings, steep-roofed warehouses and cobbled streets, especially in the atmospheric Bergkwartier. It escaped heavy war damage, which is partly why the old town still feels so complete.
For UK visitors it is best known for two events: a weekend Dickens Festival every December and a huge open-air book market every summer. Outside those dates it is a quiet, pleasant town in Overijssel for a night or two, easily paired with Zwolle. Read our Netherlands guide for more.
Things to do in Deventer
- Dickens Festijn – on a weekend in mid-December, hundreds of costumed volunteers bring characters from Charles Dickens's novels to the lanes of the Bergkwartier. It is free to enter but queues can be very long.
- Deventer Boekenmarkt – held on a Sunday in early August, with hundreds of stalls along the IJssel quays, it is often described as the largest book market in Europe.
- The Bergkwartier – the hilly old quarter around the Bergkerk, with some of the oldest houses in the country and small independent shops.
- Lebuïnuskerk – the great Gothic church on the Grote Kerkhof, with a tower that is sometimes open to climb.
- De Waag – the late-medieval weigh house on the Brink square now holds the city museum. Look for the large cauldron hanging outside, linked to a gruesome local legend.
- The Brink – the main square, ringed by cafés and historic façades and busy on market days.
- The IJssel riverside – walk along the quays or take the small foot ferry across to the meadows on the far bank for the classic view of the skyline.
- Deventer koek – a spiced honey cake made here for centuries; bakeries in the centre still sell it.

Best time to visit
Late spring and summer are best for terraces along the river and cycling in the IJssel valley, and the book market is the highlight of early August. Mid-December brings the Dickens Festival, ideal for a festive weekend, though you will need to book accommodation many months ahead and arrive early to avoid the longest queues.
during the Dickens Festival, accommodation in Deventer sells out fast, so consider staying in Zwolle, Apeldoorn or Zutphen and coming in by train.
