Frigiliana is the picture-perfect Andalucían white village: a maze of steep, cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses with bright blue doors and pots of geraniums, and views down to the Mediterranean. It sits in the foothills of the Sierra Almijara, just inland from Nerja, and its old Moorish quarter is one of the best preserved in the region.
Many people visit on a half-day trip, but staying a few nights in a village house or rural villa gives you peaceful evenings and easy access to walks and beaches. Spain is one hour ahead of the UK, plugs are the two-pin European type and you drive on the right. Eating out is generally good value. See our Costa del Sol, Andalucía and Spain guides for more.
Where to stay
- The old village – a few small hotels, guesthouses and holiday homes inside the Moorish quarter. Charming and quiet at night, but expect steep steps and little or no parking.
- Lower village – the newer part of Frigiliana, flatter, with easier parking and access to buses.
- Villas in the hills – plenty of holiday villas with pools and views surround the village, best with a hire car.
- Nerja – about 15 minutes away by car or bus, with more choice of hotels and beaches. Many people stay there and visit Frigiliana for an afternoon or evening.
Things to do
- Barrio Morisco-Mudéjar – wander the old Moorish quarter's lanes, staircases and flower-decked alleys.
- Ceramic history plaques – tiles around the village tell the story of the 1569 Morisco revolt and the battle fought on the nearby hill.
- Festival of the Three Cultures – a summer festival, usually in late August, celebrating the village's Christian, Moorish and Jewish heritage with music, food and markets.
- El Ingenio – a 16th-century palace that later housed what is often described as Europe's last cane-honey (molasses) factory.
- Hiking – trails lead into the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, including the walk to El Acebuchal, a restored hamlet once abandoned.
- Local food and wine – try miel de caña (cane honey) and the sweet local wines.
- Beach time – Nerja's beaches are just a short drive away.
Coach tours tend to arrive in late morning. Come early, or in the late afternoon and stay for dinner, to enjoy the lanes in peace and catch the sunset.

Getting there
Fly to Málaga airport (AGP), which has direct flights from almost every UK airport and takes about 2h45 from London. Frigiliana is about 65 km away, roughly an hour by car via the A-7 and the Nerja exit. Public transport means a bus from Málaga to Nerja (about 1-1h30) and then the local bus up to Frigiliana, which takes about 15 minutes.
Getting around
The village is best explored on foot, but the old quarter is steep, so wear comfortable shoes. Drivers should park in the public car park at the entrance to the village rather than attempting the narrow lanes. A small tourist train sometimes runs around the village in busy months, and buses connect with Nerja.
