Boston is one of the oldest cities in the United States and one of its most walkable. Red-brick streets, colonial churches and harbour views tell the story of the American Revolution, while Harvard and MIT give it a youthful, academic energy. There is a strong sense of history here that many British visitors find surprisingly familiar.

With flights of around seven hours, it is one of the easiest US city breaks from the UK, and a perfect start to a New England road trip. For the wider picture, see our Massachusetts guide and our USA guide.

Things to do in Boston

  1. The Freedom Trail – a 2.5-mile red line linking 16 historic sites, from Boston Common to the USS Constitution.
  2. Harvard and Cambridge – stroll Harvard Yard, the museums and the bookshops of Harvard Square.
  3. Fenway Park – watch the Red Sox or take a tour of America's oldest major league ballpark.
  4. Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum – two outstanding collections close together.
  5. Beacon Hill – gas lamps, cobbled Acorn Street and elegant townhouses.
  6. North End – Boston's Italian quarter, famous for cannoli and old-school restaurants.
  7. Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum – an interactive take on the 1773 protest.
  8. Whale watching – boat trips from the harbour to Stellwagen Bank from spring to autumn.

Where to stay

  • Back Bay – handsome streets, shopping on Newbury Street and good transport links.
  • Downtown and the Waterfront – close to the Freedom Trail and the harbour.
  • Beacon Hill – small, characterful hotels in a historic setting.
  • Seaport – modern hotels, restaurants and harbour views.
  • Cambridge – near Harvard and MIT, often a little cheaper.

Getting there

British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Delta fly direct from Heathrow to Boston in around 7 hours, and there have been services from other UK airports at times. You need an approved ESTA. From Logan, the free Silver Line bus reaches South Station, the Blue Line T heads downtown, and water taxis cross the harbour. The city is compact, so walk and use the T; hire a car only for trips to Cape Cod or the rest of New England.

Best time to visit

Late spring and early autumn are best. Autumn brings spectacular foliage across New England from late September into October, but hotels get busy and expensive. Summers are warm and lively. Winters are cold and snowy, though prices fall. Graduation weekends in May and the Boston Marathon in April fill hotels quickly.

Start the Freedom Trail at Boston Common in the morning and finish in the North End for lunch, before crossing to Charlestown for the USS Constitution.
