Ardahan is a small, high province on the borders of Georgia and Armenia, in the north of Eastern Anatolia. It is open grassland and mountain pasture, cattle country with long, hard winters, and one of the coldest corners of Turkey.
Visitors come mainly in deep winter, when Lake Çıldır freezes over and becomes a playground of sleigh rides and ice fishing. It is usually visited as a day trip from Kars, though summer has its own appeal. For entry rules and general planning, see our Turkey guide.
Things to do
- Lake Çıldır – a large high-altitude lake that freezes in winter, when horse-drawn sleighs carry visitors across the ice.
- Ice fishing – local fishermen cut holes in the ice to fish, and lakeside restaurants fry the catch.
- Şeytan Kalesi – the Devil's Castle, a ruined fortress on a rock above a deep canyon near Çıldır.
- Ardahan Castle – an Ottoman-era fortress in the provincial capital.
- Damal – a village known for a hillside shadow said to resemble Atatürk's profile, which appears in late June and draws local crowds.
- Posof – a greener, fruit-growing district near the Georgian border crossing at Türkgözü.
- Highland pastures – in summer, the yayla meadows fill with wildflowers and grazing herds.
Where to stay
- Kars – the usual base, with far more hotels, about an hour and a half away.
- Ardahan town and Çıldır – a few simple hotels and guesthouses.
Getting there
Fly from the UK to Istanbul (about four hours), then on to Kars on a domestic flight. From Kars, Lake Çıldır is roughly an hour and a half by road, and many winter tours combine the lake with the Doğu Express. For Georgia, the Türkgözü crossing near Posof is one of the road routes north.
Best time to visit
For the frozen lake, January and February are the safest bet. Ice conditions vary each year, so check locally. June to August brings mild weather and green pastures. Spring and autumn are short and unpredictable.
Temperatures on the lake can be extremely low, so wear proper thermal layers, a hat and waterproof boots.
