- Province
Muş is a farming province in Eastern Anatolia, spread across a wide plain watered by the Murat river, a major branch of the Euphrates. Mountains surround it on all sides, and it lies just west of Lake Van.
Few UK travellers stop here, but history enthusiasts know the name Malazgirt. The Battle of Manzikert in 1071, when the Seljuks defeated a Byzantine army, opened Anatolia to Turkish settlement. Muş works well as a stop between Bitlis, Van and Erzurum. For entry rules and planning, see our Turkey guide.
Things to do
- Malazgirt – the district where the Battle of Manzikert was fought; commemorations are held each August.
- Malazgirt Castle – the remains of the town's walls and fortress.
- Muş tulips – a wild tulip species associated with the province, flowering on the hillsides in spring.
- The Muş plain – a broad, fertile basin, at its greenest in late spring.
- Monastery ruins – scattered remains of Armenian monasteries, such as Surp Karapet, in the hills around the plain.
- Lake Haçlı – a small lake in Bulanık district, good for birdlife.
Where to stay
- Muş town – a few straightforward hotels.
- Van or Tatvan – larger bases within reach for a day trip.
Getting there
Fly from the UK to Istanbul (about four hours), then take a domestic flight to Muş, or fly to Van and drive west. Trains on the Ankara–Tatvan line also pass through the province. Roads are good on the main routes, but distances are long.
Best time to visit
May and June bring green plains and spring flowers, and September is pleasantly mild. Winters are long and snowy, and summers warm and dry.
